i don't know much about it.. but i saw this in a NY Times article

"But now he has spoken up for the state bill, which gives state and local police broad powers to, among other things, check people’s immigration papers if they reasonably suspect they are in the country illegally."

so basically.. a cop can be walking down the street and see a hispanic person and ask to see their immigration papers?

that's just.. wrong. it's so close-minded. not every person who isn't white is an illegal immigrant.

It reminds me of Nazi Germany where Jews were required to carry around identification papers.

Yeah, it basically just amounts to state mandated racial profiling. I've been furious about it for days. Immigration is one of my big issues, and unfortunately in America there is a lot of xenophobia and a lot of racism against Latinos (hate crimes against Latinos made up something like 40% of all hate crimes in 2008 I'm pretty sure, and Latinos are probably the most marginalized racial/ethnic group despite being the fastest growing).

How long do you think it'll be before some racist cop stops a legal citizen and arrests them basically just for being Latino?

That bill is awful. It needs to be stopped.

Luckily there are already civil rights groups preparing to file suit against it, and Obama himself is actually also having people look into filing suit, apparently, so there may be federal action against it.

It's straight up unconstitutional. If it gets to the Supreme Court, it will go down. It breaks the 4th and 14th amendments.

Yeah, it's pretty horrible. What's next, German shepherds and people with German accents shouting "Vhere are your papers? Show me your papers!'" and putting us in concentration camps?
