So one of my friends is going to school in Israel now, and apparently there's this "non-harmful" drug that you smoke called hookah there, and she tried some, and is trying to convince me that there's nothing wrong with it. Anyone know more about this?

A hookah is a smoking implement common in the middle east. What you smoke out of it is not actually a drug, but actually just flavored tobacco. You can get a bit of a head rush from it (which lasts maybe a few seconds) but that's it. My friends and I smoke it all the time.

Yeah.. it's not so much a drug as a smoking implement. It's really popular among college students in the states. A lot of people think that it's healthier than cigarettes because it's just flavored tobacco, none of the bad/harmful stuff in cigs like nicotine.

Weed CAN be smoked from it, though. Same idea.

I, personally, don't smoke anything. My lungs are precious as a (former..?) runner, so I don't put anything in my lungs that don't belong there.

Yeah, that pretty much jibes with what she told me about it (although she still made me swear I wouldn't tell her mom that she did it...tis such young folly).

i am an avid hookah smoker, all it is is wet tobacco, it is placed in a bowl, and heated by coals. it si then filtered through the water in the vase. imagine smoking tobacco through a bong. that's basically all that hookah is. but there are zillions of flavors in teh tobacco, which makes it really popular.

Considering that when it's cold out and I can see people's breath I cringe, fearing it's smoke, since the smell makes me gag, I really gotta tell my friend that if she's gonna be in the States again, she better not do any of that...

hookah isn't that bad, it's a smooth smoke and more of a furity or minty smell depending on the flavor. it smells like a cheap perfume rather than smoke. it's better for you than cigarettes.

but its dangerous to go to a hookah lounge because the bongs are not really cleaned so you you could get pnueinuma or something from it

I didn't get the impression that that's where my friend was doing it, that it was more of a recreational friend-gave-it-to-me thing.
